Many people felt that a toothpaste without Fluoride was being irresponsible as Fluoride is needed to assist remineralisation. And in reality, we're not anti-fluoride we just don't agree with many other ingredients found in commercial toothpaste. So we developed a natural base without ingredients like Propylene Glycol, Saccharin, Caustic Soda, Titanium Dioxide, SLS and lots more and then we added Fluoride.
MooGoo Moothpaste provides the oral health benefits of Fluoride without the unhealthy, synthetic fillers, binding agents and flavours that belong back in the times when we were told smoking was good for us.
Fluoride is added to most toothpaste as it assists in the remineralisation of teeth. Basically, when scratches and cracks appear in your teeth, Fluoride helps fill these cracks in before bacteria can cause tooth decay. Think of it like filling in a crack in your drywall.
What ingredients do you avoid when making a toothpaste?
There's lots of things you won't find in this toothpaste (or any of our other products) because they were all formulated for family members and close friends. This includes Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, which is a synthetic detergent derived from petroleum, but is commonly found in commercial body washes, shampoos, and even toothpaste. We don’t think putting the stuff that goes into our cars in our mouths is the healthiest thing we can do.
We also don’t use any synthetic preservatives such as Parabens and Phenoxyethanol, although they're pretty common too, including with a few brands that claim to be natural (you know who you are!). There are many more but way too many to list here. Take a look at the ingredient listing on your toothpaste at home. You may be surprised, even shocked to see what you’ll find.
Why Did We Choose Sodium Fluoride and not Calcium Fluoride?
We first considered Calcium Fluoride. It is more natural and occurs naturally in sea water, rocks etc. The problem is that although Calcium Fluoride would look better on our label, it doesn’t do anything for the teeth. The reason is that it is not water soluble and so pretty much just gets spat out or ingested.
Sodium Fluoride gets broken down by your saliva (water soluble) and when in contact with the enamel it combines with the calcium and phosphate to harden up the protection for your teeth and help prevent tooth decay.
We hope you agree that if we're going to use Fluoride, we should use the type that works rather than the one that looks good. There are other types of Fluoride also in use, but we chose not to use those as we didn’t feel comfortable using them ourselves. We also, of course, have a version of Moothpaste that is Fluoride Free and contains Hydroxyapatite. This is a natural ingredient that has been shown in studies to be an effective alternative to Fluoride.

Why doesn’t your toothpaste foam as much as the other brands I’m used to?
For those new to natural toothpaste, you may find it a little different to the main commercial brands. Just like shampoo and wash products, toothpaste often contains Sodium Lauryl Sulphate. Natural cleansers don’t hold their foam as long as synthetic detergents like SLS, but we think they're superior and much better for you and the environment. Considering how much toothpaste we swallow, and children often swallowing it all, we think this small compromise is worth it. This just means a little bit more elbow grease needed to get the foam going, but all that brushing will actually leave you with cleaner teeth.
Why doesn’t your toothpaste taste as minty as the other brands I’m used to?
Many people seem to be, dare we say addicted, to the strong, artificial minty flavour burst of commercial toothpastes. We trialed so many formulas to try to replicate this as best we could with natural ingredients, and we think we come pretty darn close.
Sorbitol (Keeps it moist and tasty), Sodium Bicarbonate (Low Abrasive Bicarb), Bentonite Clay, Xylitol (Fights Cavity Making Germs), Tapioca Starch, Aqua (H₂O’s Fancy Name), Flavour (Low Allergenic Peppermint), Xanthan Gum (Food Grade Thickener), Decyl Glucoside (Natural Cleanser), Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf Extract (Natural Sweetener), Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate (Coconut &Taurine Derived Cleanser), Sodium Fluoride (Remineraliser).
Even when we spit out toothpaste, we ingest some and our mouths also absorb contents into the blood-stream. Not to mention how much toothpaste children swallow. For this reason we choose ingredients that are healthy while being the very best at keeping our teeth healthy and strong.
We show all the ingredients on our website, not just the pretty ones. That way you can see why we chose them and get in touch if you have any more questions.
