As the temperatures drop and winter sets in, many of us can experience a change in our skin. It may become drier, itchier, and for some, Eczema worsens. Managing skin conditions such as Eczema often require a holistic approach, which is why we are delighted that for this year’s Eczema Awareness Week, we are launching our collaboration with Eczema Clothing.
Like MooGoo, Eczema Clothing was founded when looking for a solution for a loved one’s skin condition. MooGoo was made for a mum and Eczema Clothing was made by a mum. Jo, who took over the business in 2021, and Dorothy, who founded it in 1980, are mothers of families whose lives have been dominated by Eczema and allergies.
After many sleepless, distressing nights and stressful days watching their daughters suffer, scratching their itchy sore skin, they were inspired to design suitable clothing light enough to float over irritated skin, but strong enough to protect it.
Cotton stood out as the best available fabric - soft, durable, and capable of withstanding high-temperature washes. Dorothy was a pioneer in the use of Organic Cotton, always focusing on natural products and avoiding the use of chemicals.
Now, more than 40 years later, Eczema Clothing offers a wide range of over 100 products designed for adults and children with Eczema or other itchy skin conditions.
Eczema, a condition characterized by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin, can be triggered by various factors. For some individuals, cold weather exacerbates Eczema due to the breakdown of the skin's natural barrier and the tendency to take hotter showers, which further can damage and weaken the skin barrier. However, others may experience flare-ups during spring and autumn when pollen and other allergens are abundant in the air. Eczema triggers can vary from person to person, so it's important to observe and try to pinpoint individual triggers. Studies have shown a significant increase in Eczema rates over the years, particularly among children. While the exact cause of this increase remains unclear, Eczema is linked to immune system dysfunction, where the immune system reacts to harmless substances as if they were pathogens.
Effective management of Eczema involves maintaining a healthy skin barrier and minimising exposure to triggers. Prevention plays a crucial role in managing Eczema. Avoiding hot showers and harsh cleansers, and opting for gentle, SLS free options such as our Milk Wash or Ultra Gentle Cleanser with Ceramides, can help maintain skin health. Steroid creams prescribed by doctors are commonly used to alleviate inflammation, but long-term use can have adverse effects on the skin.
Natural alternatives, such as soothing moisturisers and creams with anti-inflammatory properties, offer long-term relief without the side effects of steroids. Our Sensitive Skin Balm contains soothing ingredients like Centella Asiatica to help relieve the itching and inflammation, whilst the Eczema Cream with Ceramides is formulated with innovative skin barrier technology to calm and protect the skin.
Clothing touches your skin – it’s as simple as that. So the fabric it is made of and the design of the garment can make a very big difference to how your skin feels. It also acts as a barrier to the outside elements so can protect your skin against them.
The wrong fabric will make you more itchy and irritated. The wrong design may have scratchy seams, irritating labels, and excess folds of fabric that make you hot and expose parts of your body to allergens rather than protect them.
The right fabric and the right design can make the world of difference to your comfort. Eczema Clothing try and test every garment they stock to ensure that it is suitable for people with Eczema or any other itchy, sensitive skin condition.
By avoiding known triggers and maintaining a healthy skin barrier by incorporating non-irritating cleansers, soothing moisturisers and wearing purposefully, well designed clothing, individuals can mitigate the impact of Eczema and enjoy greater comfort throughout the changing seasons.
